Social Studies teacher David Hildebrand received a Teaching American History fellowship for the second year, and will be researching the market dynamics of the Port of Baltimore and the Maryland hinterland from the Colonial period through World War II in late June. His work on the emancipation of the Ridgely slaves during last year's TAH seminar was published on the National Parks website.
The Robodoves, Western's robotics team, competed at the FIRST robotics competition at the Baltimore Convention Center March 11-13. A WJZ story and video both feature the Western team.

Shelby Simmons '10, Ashley Sommers '12, and Ashley Tunstall '10 were finalists in this year's "Champions of Courage" Black History Month Essay Competition, each earning a $100.00 Savings Bond. Shelby Simmons was the grand prize winner. In addition to the $100.00 bond, Shelby won a $500.00 Savings Bond and two tickets to see "The Color Purple." Ashley Tunstall was last year’s grand prize winner.

State Senator Lisa Gladden and City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, both Western alumnae, addressed the entire Western student body at an assembly on October 8, 2009, and presented the school with portraits of President Obama for the school's classrooms.
